There. Maybe I went a bit far overcompensating with all the exclamation points, but I am satisfied I’ve now done my duty as a good friend. Jamie replies with another photo, this one a selfie of her with her boyfriend—I mean, fiancé, so weird! They’re both beaming with pure joy as she holds up her ring-adorned hand.

I feel ashamed all over again. I am glad for her; Jamie’s a good person who deserves this happiness. If her joy happens to double as a giant mirror shining light on the emptiness in my own life…well, that’s a me problem.

The following day, she messages me again.

JAMIE: My moms got a last-minute flight, so we’re having the engagement party this weekend.
